Harry Potter Challenge Day 12: Fave ship.

I know ship is supposed to mean “relationSHIP” which is supposed to mean dating, but I think any relationship can be as valuable as a dating relationship.

So I ship Harry and Hermione as friends. They are just my favorite friendship. Hermione has struggles being best friends with two boys and I value her friendship with Harry more than anything else. She has the ability to care for Harry in a deeply intimate way without the implications that deep feelings usually come with, like dating and worse matrimony.

For me it’s one of the most refreshing and natural relationships in the book. The two of them work extremely well together, and they get sick of one another and they listen to one another and they don’t listen to one another and they always remain friends. They don’t get in the epic fights Hermione and Ron can get in with everyone else, they are the definition of soul mates (someone for whom you have a great affinity).

Harry Potter Challenge Day 11: What character would you say you are most like.

Hermione. I was called Hermione by my classmates in 4th and 5th grade. I find myself agreeing with her about 80% of the time when she does things. I would absolutely get a time turner to fit in a heavy work load and take a bunch of extra classes right now if I could. I would also use it to catch enough sleep and for extra homework time, so I might be a bit more of a ruler breaker, but mostly I’d stick to the reasonable time-turner rules on that s-o-b.

I used to care much more about rules, now I don’t really regard any rules unless I can’t avoid them. I feel like Hermione made a similar progression. I am pretty stubborn like Hermione and can be too opinionated. I fell in love with a Ron Weasley type. I’m extremely passionate about my work. I’m absolutely for equality and animal rights.

But I’m also a bit more mellow. I’m easily stressed, but I’m easily a goof-ball-weirdo too.

Day 10: Horcruxes or Hallows.

Hallows of course. I feel like I’ve got the same weakness as Dumbledore, I’d want to use the stone and speak to some people I love who have died. Ideally I’d like to reject the idea of the wand, stone and cloak, or just want the cloak. I know that the most logical answer is to take the cloak and meet death openly once you’re ready/ I’m an insanely logical person, but I wouldn’t turn down the stone, even though I understand the implications and the torment.

It’s too easy to hate Voldemort, he’s the dark lord.

I think Lucius Malfoy is the worst guy. He’s racist, he’s rich, he’s conceited, and he’s a bully. Basically every death eater is this way so they all fall under the same umbrella.

Karkaroff is a total D-Bag and I didn’t feel bad when he was murdered even though I wasn’t happy either.

I hate Ludo Bagman since he screwed over the Weasley twins.

Barty Crouch Jr. is definitely an evil ass motherfucker. But knowing his back story helps me understand his progression to the evil person he became. I even understand why Voldemort was so shitty and I pity both of these motherfuckers. Years of shitty fathering realized in two really angry guys.

I might dislike Fudge the most though. He’s just so thick. He is such a politician, and he allows himself to be taken in by racist shit heads like Malfoy. Sometimes the worst people are not those who own to their shitty behavior but those who are blind to it. If you can’t admit you’re wrong and judge people for more than their piles of gold, then you’re not a good person. I could name other ministry workers like Scrimgeour, who I dislike and distrust but basically don’t trust politicians!

On that note I need to state once more how I am MUCH less worried about shitty behavior from known shit heads than from people who coast through life as “decent” human beings, who just do shitty things here and there. Nope, still shitty, not okay because you’re “nice” to people.

Harry Potter Challenge Day 8: What do you think would be your fave lesson.

I would probably be the most interested in Potions because I love to cook, but it’s so not a vegan craft. I’d have trouble finding vegan versions of every potion. But I do it with recipes now so I could probably do the same in the fictional world. Snape would be so pissed.

I’d have to take Magical Creatures with Hagrid. I love getting dirty and scrapped (when I earn it) and wrestling a blast-ended skrewt sounds like fun. Plus it’s mainly an outdoor class which is my favorite place to be. I also love animals so learning about different creatures would be so exciting. Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them was my go-to book in middle school.

I know I’d love Transfiguration with McGonagall too. Having her as a teacher would be so challenging and I love that, but turning my desk into a pig would be the best. I just want to turn everything into an animal to hangout with.

If Lupin was my teacher I’d love Defense Against the Dark Arts, but every other teacher would drive me crazy.

But the class I’d love to learn about the most would be Herbology. I want to be able to grow things so badly! And if I want to be a master vegan potion maker, I’ll need to be up on my herbs.

Harry Potter Challenge Day 7: Fave female character and why.

Well Hermione is my immediate answer. Because i identify with her so much. It was validating as a 10 year old nerd to feel okay with being who I was because I got to see an important character in a book with books instead of boy troubles. I’m controlling like Hermione and a huge planner, but I try to be flexible just like her. Her love for reading and desire for knowledge resonate with me, and I would totally quit school come the revolution, but if I found out I was a wizard I would be so damn stoked I would memorize all my school books as well. Her commitment to her friends, her activism for animal rights. I’m a vegan teacher, how can she not be my favorite character in the fictional realm? And her unreasonable love for someone who is the complete opposite of her. Guilty.

Then there is Ginny. I adore her. I love how she went from being quiet and frail to strong and independent. She grew so much and I respect her so much for coming into her own after her terrible experience her first year. She’s a bad-ass.

Minerva McGonagall is one of the most powerful women in the books and I love her teaching method. She expects the most out of her students, she does not play favorites and she forgives mistakes, but cares about teaching lessons. She is strong and capable older woman and she is professional but fiery. She learns from her mistakes and learns alongside her students, trusting them and their abilities.

Luna! How could I almost forget her? Luna is amazing, so much fun, so true to herself and so genuine. She isn’t afraid to make her own theories and defies the concept of “not possible.” She truly understands that work, play, imagination, science, math, and every other subject we are told should be separate, are actually all used together and result in a more complex understanding of the world.

This is really great. Last year I went to a really great discussion panel with several authors who discussed race and culture and its influence on writing. It’s something I’ve discussed in only one of my fiction writing classes: fantasy. We would mainly focus on the complexities of including cultures other than your own in your writing but how to balance between just making characters a different culture randomly just to fulfill a diversity quota and not going so far as to assume you can speak for other people and their experiences.

When you’re writing a character you put part of yourself in them no matter what, so how can you write realistic characters of diversity when you cannot totally understand any culture but your own?

Some authors just subscribe to using their own culture because they base their fiction off of non-fiction. But in the fantasy world I feel like the worst representations surface of attempted diversity. And when other cultures surface outside of the author’s main culture it can become just a comical character.

I can’t currently point out any authors who have truly incorporated multiple cultures without something that is offensive. But the conclusion I’ve come to is that authors need to keep trying and they need to keep asking for feedback and they need to reflect and recognize what the implications are of their words.

Something that was brought up in my Reggio conference was the the idea of “re-cognize” and what the true meaning of this word is, to re cognize (cognition) to re-think what we have done. And as long as we can re-cognize then we can move forward with new theories and new ideas.

I wish more people were called out more often and decided to recognize instead of defend.

Harry Potter Challenge Day 6: What house would you want to be in.

I am constantly flip flopping on this question. This is the basic dynamic I see in the houses:

Gryffindor- The Jocks and Popular Kids
Slytherin- The Rich Kids
Ravenclaw- The Geeks and Nerds
Hufflepuff- The Freaks and Rejects

I don’t feel like I belong in the first two. I feel compelled as a nerd to be in Ravenclaw, I love to exercise my mind more than anything, I find riddles and puzzles more entertaining than television. But I identify with the rejects, I’m the kid who got bullied, I’m the one who didn’t talk to anyone because I’m too socially awkward. I feel like Hufflepuff is for all the punks.

I think part of being punk is being your weird self, so Hufflepuff is probably the house for me. If Hermione is a nerd and a Gryffindor, I can be a dork and be a part of Hufflepuff. I definitely feel like part of “the lot.”
